How PinCountryMap Works

Make a clean map in five steps. Most maps take a few minutes, and nothing needs to be installed or signed up for.

Step 1: Choose a map view and, if you like, a country

Open the Map Studio and pick Satellite, Terrain or Light. Light is the cleanest for slides and reports, Satellite gives context and Terrain shows hills and rivers. If your map is about one country, type its name in the Country box. The rest of the world is hidden and the downloaded image is trimmed to the country outline. Under City highlights you can also shade cities in colours of your choice.

Step 2: Add your places

Type a latitude and longitude, paste a list with one place per line, or import an Excel or CSV file. Coordinates can be decimal numbers, or degrees, minutes and seconds with N, S, E and W letters. A preview shows any row that cannot be read before anything is added. The guide on plotting coordinates from Excel covers the details.

Step 3: Draw a route or an area

Press Draw route, then click or tap the map to place points along the way. Draw area closes the shape into a polygon. Give each stop an icon, such as a hotel, a food stop or a camp, and a short note like "2-day stay". Drag any point to adjust it, and change the colour, width or dashing of the line. Press Finish when the shape is done. For ideas, read the guide on creating a travel itinerary map.

Step 4: Style and label

Choose a marker shape, size and colour, or colour your places by category. Names can be dragged into place or arranged automatically, and you can add a legend, a north arrow and a scale bar.

Step 5: Download and save

Pick Standard, High quality or Print quality and download a PNG. Credits for the map providers are added to the image for you. Use Save project to keep your work in a small file you can reopen later.

On a phone

The map fills the screen and the tools sit in a panel at the bottom that you can slide away. While you draw a route the panel tucks itself down, and a Finish drawing button floats over the map.
